School Day (8:40 am – 3:15 pm)
The Shute School day begins at 8:40 a.m. Students are welcome to arrive at school any time between 8:30 and 8:40 a.m. We ask that students enter through the gym entrance of the school and go to the gym. Students who arrive after 8:40 a.m. should check in with Mrs. Tucker at the office.
*School Improvement Days: Students will be dismissed at 12:30- lunch will be served.
*Early Dismissal Days (includes Christmas and Spring Break): Students are dismissed at 2:40.
Lunch Money: Please send your child’s lunch money in an envelope with his/her name and lunch number on it. You may pay by the day or send in a larger amount. The cafeteria personnel will send a reminder note when more money is due.
Lunch Number: Your child will be given a six digit lunch number. This number will be used until 8th grade! It is important that you work with your child on memorizing this number. The best way to do so is to memorize it in double digit groups. For example, if the number is 103341, memorize it as 10-33-41. This has helped my students in the past tremendously. I will be providing a lunch ticket at the beginning of the school year, or until your child has memorized his/her lunch number. Typically, students have lunch numbers memorized by October.
Snack and Drink: All parents are responsible for their child’s snack and drink. Please send a snack (fresh fruit should be cut or pealed at home) each day with your child, as well as a drink (juice box or water bottle, no sodas or sports drinks please). I understand that there will be days when snacks are forgotten, if this occurs don’t worry, I will provide a small snack. Please keep in mind we only have 10 minutes for snack time so it is best to keep snacks simple and small. If there are “leftovers” your child may leave them in his/her cubbie for the next day.
Class Behavior System and Rewards: In our classroom we will use the clip up/down chart that is divided into levels. All of the children start the day in the middle of the chart on Ready to Learn (GREEN). Then, during the course of the day, the children move their clothespins up or down the chart, based on the behavioral choices they make. The following levels are above Good Day (GREEN): Way to Go! (PINK), Excellent Effort (BLUE), Super Student (PURPLE). The levels below Ready to Learn (GREEN) are: Make Better Choices (YELLOW), Teacher's Choice (ORANGE), Parent Contact (RED). If they are making good choices, they can move their clothespin up a level at a time. Inappropriate behavior would cause them to move down a level. Since the children start in the middle of the chart, they have numerous opportunities to work their way up the chart. This really helps the children realize that they have to have self-control and be responsible for their actions and behavior if they want to be recognized for making good choices. Making it to the top of the chart is not easy, but it is definitely attainable. The children quickly realize how they must conduct themselves in order to achieve this goal. At the end of the day your child will fill out their daily behavior sheet to bring home for you to see. It is very important that you check and discuss your child’s behavior daily! Please be sure to initial your child’s behavior sheet each night after discussing the day with them. PLEASE DO NOT KEEP THE DAILY REPORT AT HOME.
Daily Folders: I will be giving each student a GREEN Daily Folder to take home and bring back to school each day. This is a great way to help all of us stay organized. It helps not to lose papers or important notes from school to home or vice-versa. One side of the folder will say “KEEP AT HOME”. This side will have work done in class, notes from school or myself, weekly newsletters/monthly newsletters, letters from the office/cafeteria. Please empty this pocket each night. The other side will say “RETURN TO SCHOOL”. This side will always have the Daily Reflection in it for you to initial. This is also where you will put any notes you have for myself or the office and lunch money. Please take very good care of the daily folder. It will be used all year.
Buses and Pick-Up: Your child will be given a color card necklace with their name, bus #, and drop off. Please make sure this necklace comes back to school everyday!! This is very important! Parents will have 2 color cards (you only need to only use one) that match the color of your child’s necklace. These two cards will have your child’s name, bus #, and drop off as well. You will need to be at your child’s bus stop with this card. The bus driver will need to see your card before your child gets off the bus. This will happen for the first month until bus drivers become familiar with faces. If someone else other than the normal person is at the stop they will have to present the card. Please note: if nobody is at your child’s drop off he/she will not be allowed to get off the bus. They will be brought back to school and a phone call will be made.
If you pick-up your child they will be waiting in the gym. You will need to park in the side parking lot and pick your child up at the left gym door. You will not need to go in through the front doors during this time.
If there is a transportation change, I or Mrs. Tucker will need to know ASAP. There will need to be a note or phone call from you. We can not take your child’s word for it.
Monthly Newsletter: You will receive a newsletter from me on the first school day of each month. On this you will find what we are learning about, important dates, reminders, and other important bits of information for that particular month. I find this helps families to plan ahead for important dates. It is a great idea to KEEP THIS NEWSLETTER ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR (or another place that you will see it each day).
Show and Tell: Depending on our schedule for the week we may or may not have show and tell. If we do, this will usually take place on Fridays and can coincide with the letter of the week. If we do have show and tell I will inform you through the monthly newsletter. Please be on the look out when reading the monthly newsletter and try your best to have your child participate. They always have fun participating in show and tell!!
Birthdays: We love to celebrate birthdays in our room! We sing to the birthday boy or girl and he or she receives a birthday small surprise. We have a new birthday treat policy this year. Birthday treats are not allowed to be passed out due to allergies and potential unhealthiness. Your child may bring an object to pass out (pencils, gift bag goodies, etc.) but no food or candy. Please refer to the letter passed out at registration for further questions. Also, according to Shute School policy, invitations may NOT be passed out in classes. There will be a booklet of Shute/Lincoln families and their addresses (if they choose to be in it) available.
Out-of-Class Subjects: Our class has P.E. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday with Ms. Potendyk. Gym shoes may be left at school, or you may also just send your child to school in tennis shoes on those days. We have music with Mr. Whitman on Tuesday and Wednesday. We have Library/Computers with Mrs. Martin on Tuesday and Thursday.
STAY INVOLVED
Please stay involved! You are welcome to come and visit, help out in the room whether it be with a small group or behind the scenes, or go on field trips. I just ask that you inform me ahead of time.
I am here for your child and for you as well!
Sincerely,
Miss Fisher
